Empathic (ITEA 2~11005) project: “EMPATHIC PRODUCTS”


An empathic application that  recognizes consumer preferences based on a combination of emotional, behavioural and sensory information; provides more effective feedback from consumers about their food choices and helps to improve customer interaction with its consumers; and gives additional helpful information about food products.


EMPATHIC project outcomes:

  • Methodology for empathic (intentional & emotion enabled) applications in food market was created;
  • New models for exploiting sensory attributes & intention & emotion awareness of food consumers was formed;
  • Emotion & intention enabling technologies tested & validated in food market: baking and confectionary industries.

Study showed that Noldus FaceReader technology is sufficiently accurate to detect significant differences in facial expressions elicited by different food samples and can deliver additional information to conventional acceptance tests. The correlations obtained show that facial expressions are good indicators for self-reported liking.  Furthermore, emotions, attitude and behaviour interface model was designed, which can give a significant information about food products evaluation and food choice. Strong relationship between attitude and behaviour was also observed.

Development of a Working Model of an Innovative Hybrid Packaging 3D Printer


The device combines two well-known package forming methods. One of the methods is forming packages from polymer films.

As the 3D printer industry expands, they are now also used in packaging production; however, at the moment, packages produced by 3D printers are expensive.

Our device would combine the traditional method of forming packages from films with an innovative 3D printer technology.

It would expand the possibilities of packaging developers which would allow to create new optimum environmentally-friendly packages.


An innovative model for a hybrid package forming device is in progress by using 3D technology.

Cone Penetration System for Soil Exploration


To identify engineering geological conditions, physical-mechanical characteristics of the soil are needed. This type of information can be obtained after the soil engineering geological research.

Nowadays, fast and quite cheap soil research methods, which allow obtaining of all the information about engineering geological information, are widely spread. One of these methods is static probing or penetration.

IES research group is doing a research on creating an intelligent probe and integrating it with a management system.

Such system would allow to design and build bases of various buildings quicker, cheaper and more accurately.

Technology for Fabrication of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) Transducers


The developed photolithography-based fabrication technology may be applied to produce microactuators and microsensors suitable for numerous applications, e.g. telecom, automotive, medical, measurement and various industrial equipment.

This surface micromachining technology uses a combination of different thin film deposition and etching processes such as wet and reactive ion etching, electron-beam vacuum evaporation, electroplating, etc. The technology was successfully implemented for fabrication of electrostatic microrelays and micromotors.


Available technological infrastructure enables small-batch fabrication as well as electric and dynamic characterization of MEMS transducers.

Micromechanical Electrostatic Relay


It is a micro-scale device with lateral dimensions in the range of tens to hundreds of micrometers; thickness of the microcantilever is about 2.0 µm; contact gap is smaller than 1.5 µm.


In order to strengthen attachment of the microcantilever to the substrate, stepped pyramid-shaped fractal microstructures with high effective surface area formed in the anchor region during fabrication process, which results in improved device reliability.

Electronic Device for Soil Humidity Measurement


A working prototype for humidity measurement, designed in real conditions, allowing to measure soil humidity with less than 10% error.

The research was performed with different soil types, whose electric characteristics were measured by using a finite element method, simulated and optimized using interlocked electrode sensors and chip AD5933 for impedance measurement.

The developed device will help to identify clay-type soils by the humidity parameter, with reference to the quantitative index of this parameter. This is relevant for clay-type soils with higher humidity.

Object Tracking and Security System without GPS


The device reacts to the movement and if the wood is moved, it sends an alarm message to the owner.

The path of a GSM device could be monitored by the PC after receiving alarm message.

After the storage place is found, the log could be located by using special equipment because of the hidden RFID and GSM device which will help you prove that the wood belongs to you.
