Acoustic Wave Application for the Analysis of the Quality & Safety of Porous Food & Non-food Systems

A quick method for the detection of mycotoxins in grains and an acoustic device for the evaluation of the quality of porous food systems in production.

ACOUSTICS project outcomes – the project has proved the usability of the acoustic method both by acoustic wave transition and by reflection in the creation of a quick and cheap method for the detection of the following mycotoxins: (i) deoxynivalenol (DON) in wheat and (ii) aflatoxin (AFT) in corn, as well as (iii) the evaluation of the structure/texture of porous food matrices, such as bread, biscuits, extruded products, and/or their changes during storage.

Specific knowledge gained during the ACOUSTICS project allowed to create specialized software which was installed during the implementation of the acoustic device prototype.

Innovative solution for the reduction of biological pollution of organically grown grains.

Novelty.

The result of the Bioekotech project – a new antimicrobial lactic acid fermented bioproduct for increasing the health of cereal grains in organic farming.

Research results revealed that bacteria produced by spontaneous rye sourdoughs displayed strong antimicrobial (antifungal) activity.

Therefore, bioproducts which include these bacteria can be effectively used to increase the health of food products, environmental hygienisation, and reducing biological contamination in organic and traditional farming.

Oil extracts are natural flavourings and a source of antioxidants and other biologically active substances; balanced cold-pressed oil mixtures can be consumed by those who lack α-linolenic fatty acids in their diet together with the required daily amount of the fatty acid in order to improve health.

Biodegradable Food Packaging Materials

Aprašymas:

Biodegradable food packaging materials based on renewable resources as alternatives to conventional fossil fuel based plastics. Such bioplastics are biodegraded by microorganisms in their natural environment and are fully compostable. The products of this process are energy, biomass, water and carbon dioxide or methane, depending of the presence or absence of oxygen.

Active compounds and ingredients can be added to biodegradable food packaging materials in order to extend shelf-life and improve quality and safety of food products.

Empathic (ITEA 2~11005) project: “EMPATHIC PRODUCTS”

Aprašymas:

An empathic application that  recognizes consumer preferences based on a combination of emotional, behavioural and sensory information; provides more effective feedback from consumers about their food choices and helps to improve customer interaction with its consumers; and gives additional helpful information about food products.

EMPATHIC project outcomes:

  • Methodology for empathic (intentional & emotion enabled) applications in food market was created;
  • New models for exploiting sensory attributes & intention & emotion awareness of food consumers was formed;
  • Emotion & intention enabling technologies tested & validated in food market: baking and confectionary industries.

Study showed that Noldus FaceReader technology is sufficiently accurate to detect significant differences in facial expressions elicited by different food samples and can deliver additional information to conventional acceptance tests. The correlations obtained show that facial expressions are good indicators for self-reported liking.  Furthermore, emotions, attitude and behaviour interface model was designed, which can give a significant information about food products evaluation and food choice. Strong relationship between attitude and behaviour was also observed.

Novel Processing Technique to Produce Fibrous Nano and Micro Structures

Air Cleaning System

Aprašymas:

The device combines multiple processes (advanced oxidation/ catalysis/ absorption/ filtration) to achieve deeply clean air suitable for broad range of applications (ventilation, clean rooms, specific environments).

Aerosol particles (combustion exhaust, diesel exhaust, nanoparticles, dust, biological particles) and gaseous pollutants (CO, NO2, broad range of volatile compounds - VOCs) are removed during the process.

The treatment level may be specifically designed for the client requirements in order to minimize operational costs. The complex application of broad range of methods allows for pollutant decomposition with the highest efficiency with lowest costs. The decomposition method does not use any chemicals and only needs electric power.

Wastewater Treatment Plant for Deep-Cleaning of Wastewater Contaminated with Oil Products

Aprašymas:

An effective technology developed for cleaning water from hard-to-degrade toxic oil compounds uses the sorption capacity of a special sorbent and the oxidative potential of degrading microorganisms. The layer of microorganisms formed on particles of activated carbon creates a stable, resistant, and effective complex consisting of sorbent, microorganisms, and pollutants.

The plant operates under aerobic conditions, while the sorbent self-regenerates when dynamic equilibrium is reached, thus there is no need to replace it regularly. As the pollution of wastewater changes, the plant switches between absorption, biochemical degradation, and sorbent regeneration processes. 

The applications of the technology is continuously expanded to the treatment of other types of polluted waters, such as pharmaceutical and textile industries.

Research of the Properties and the Structure of Self-Compacting Concrete

Aprašymas:

Concrete and reinforced concrete constructions made out of this concrete have a non-porous, visually pleasing concrete surface.

This concrete does not require additional compaction; meanwhile, construction reinforcement can be highly dense. The use of such concrete in reinforced concrete factories allows maximum automation of the production process.

The developed technology allows to produce a concrete mix which is superior technologically, has the best physical and mechanical properties, and is the easiest to use. The spread of the concrete mix is less than 650 mm.

Novelty:

We expect this fluid concrete mix to replace around two thirds of the usual concrete mix in Europe over the next 10 years.

EU 7th FP Project ‘Re-design of the Dairy Industry for Sustainable Milk Processing’ (SUSMILK)

The main idea of the collaborative project „Re-design of the dairy industry for sustainable milk processing“ (SUSMILK) is to analyze and optimize the whole process chain for milk and milk products with regard to energy and water consumption.

The project aims at developing new concepts and technologies for the supply of heat, cold and power and integrating them into the respective process steps. The integration of innovative and efficient technologies into a “green dairy” concept that will aim at maximizing water and energy savings is a central part of the project.

  • Concepts based on research results to highlight the potential for recycling of energy and mass flows by transforming waste flows into valuable products.

Inorganic chemical technology for recycling (decontamination) of elemental mercury-containing light bulbs and elemental mercury waste, which turns elemental mercury into harmless compounds has been developed.

Recycling of light bulbs involves chemical decontamination of mercury vapor and separation of glass and metal in a special machine.

Utilization of liquid mercury is based on the reaction of collected mercury spills with an inorganic material to form a non-hazardous compound. This compound is suitable as a raw material for the subsequent recovery of metallic mercury.

Ultra High Performance Fibre Concrete with Advanced Mechanical Properties and Durability

It has been proved that ultra high performance concrete can be prepared not only from expensive reactive powder but also from cheaper (local) materials.

Research has already found links between concrete’s properties and durability as well as identified its change patterns; the technology for achieving the optimum composition of the concrete as well as using it in a mixture has also been identified.

Novelty:

Ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) mixture with advanced mechanical and durability properties was created using ordinary mixer. Compressive strength varied  from 130 MPa (without micro steel fibres) up to 170 MPa (with 147 kg/m3 micro steel fibres). Flexural strength can be increased more than 5 times – from 6.9 MPa (without micro steel fibres) up to 36.2 MPa (with 147 kg/m3). Salt-scaling resistance at 40 cycles in 3% NaCl solution varied from 0.006 kg/m2 to 0.197 kg/m2.

The invention relates to antimicrobial silicone substances, which are obtained by using multifunctional fillers and silicon matrix composites. Using environmentally friendly, simple synthesis techniques to create composites. Silicone was filled with the obtained composites of natural polymer metal particles. The created modified multifunctional filler and silicone composite is characterized by good physical and chemical properties, as well as strong antimicrobial effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Created cellulose-based particles and metal nanoparticles composites as multi functional fillers within polymer matrices. Synthesis  of nanocomposites are simple, environment friendly and economical. Obtained composites are stable and non-cytotoxic. Created  unique diffusion system in polymer matrix, which has no analogues in the world.

Non-Autoclaved Aerated Concrete

Development of a Working Model of an Innovative Hybrid Packaging 3D Printer

As the 3D printer industry expands, they are now also used in packaging production; however, at the moment, packages produced by 3D printers are expensive.

Our device would combine the traditional method of forming packages from films with an innovative 3D printer technology.

Electronic Device for Soil Humidity Measurement

A working prototype for humidity measurement, designed in real conditions, allowing to measure soil humidity with less than 10% error.

The research was performed with different soil types, whose electric characteristics were measured by using a finite element method, simulated and optimized using interlocked electrode sensors and chip AD5933 for impedance measurement.

The developed device will help to identify clay-type soils by the humidity parameter, with reference to the quantitative index of this parameter. This is relevant for clay-type soils with higher humidity.

All sensors of the “Parksol” system are integrated with digital signal processing (DSP), adaptive sensitivity and temperature compensation functions.

Sensor sends information about occupied parking places to the ParkSol system in real-time. The number of available parking places is displayed on the LED-type screens.

Ultrasound sensor is dedicated to be fixed on the ceiling or cable channel to detect the occupation of the car parking place. It is recommended for parking lots with roof.
